Dr. Lipman has served as commentator and analyst for CNN, MSNBC, BBC, NBC Evening News, ABC World News Tonight, CBS News, NPR, CBC, CTV, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Agence France Press, The Associated Press, Le Point, The Chicago Tribune, and many more, on the psychological causes, effects, and prevention of violence, mass violence, family, couple and workplace violence; and terrorism, such as the 2013 Washington Navy Yard Shootings,2013 Boston Marathon attacks, the 2013 Sandy Hook elementary school shootings; the 2013 Christopher Jordan Dorner manhunt; the 2012 Aurora, Colorado theater shootings; the 2012 shooting of Representative Gabrielle Giffords, where he was the first to correctly identify the mental state of the perpetrator, Jared Loughner; the 2012 Sikh Temple mass shootings in Oak Creek, Wisconsin; the Virginia Tech shootings; the Columbine shootings; the Westroads Mall mass shooting; the shootings by Kip Kinkel in Springfield, Oregon; the mass shootings in Jonesboro; the mass shootings in Nickel Mines, in Paducah, and in Pearl; in notable cases of family homicide such as the Hejin shootings; and in cases of workplace violence such as the Mark O. Barton case, among many other national cases.

In the area of terrorism, Dr. Lipman has been one of the nation's most prominent commentators and analysts on the psychological causes, effects, and response to terrorist events, such as fear, panic, impact on families, children, communities and nation, and coping with the threat that such events invoke. This has included daily national coverage of the September 11, 2001 terrorism attacks throughout the crisis, advising daily on the national response to coping with these events, and also serving as an Expert Witness on the effects of terrorism upon the nation; leading the commentary and analysis on the subsequent anthrax attacks and the psychological response in coping with these attacks; analyzing the psychology of terrorists, such as Zacarias Moussaoui; analysis of the terrorist kidnapping of journalist Jill Carroll, and her successful release; examining the causes of the Fort Hood shooting and the mind of the terrorist, Nidal Hasan; and providing advice, analysis and understanding of the social and personal effects of terrorism, on personal fear and anxiety, and how best to respond and cope with these effects in individuals, families, communities and nationally.

Dr. Alan J. Lipman has served as a professor at Georgetown University, The George Washington University, and Rutgers University, and has also held positions at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Yale Psychiatric Institute. At Georgetown, he founded the Center for the Study of Violence as well as the Georgetown Youth Violence Summit, and currently serves as Founder and Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Violence in Georgetown, as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The George Washington University Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry, and as Founder and Clinical Director of Washington Psychotherapy and Legal Consulting.

Dr. Lipman was named as the Co-Chair of the Academic Advisory Council of the White House Campaign Against Youth Violence, initiated at a White House summit during the Clinton Administration, and as Director of Research. He is an Invited Member of the Peer Review College of the United Kingdom's National Economic and Social Research Council. He also has served as a consultant on violence, mass violence and its effects on individuals and communities to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and to the U.S. Department of State.

He is author on 15 publications in professional journals, has served as an Invited Peer Reviewer for the American Psychological Association, as an Expert in Psychology for publishers such as McGraw Hill, Prentice Hall, and Allyn and Bacon, and as an Expert Witness in national legal trials of crimes, violence, and mass violence.
